I’ve been watching Wirtual, a trackmania youtuber grinding a tower map. This is hard to do. He spend hundreds of hour hunting this map. And he fall everytime. This is depressing for him. The question is should he quit? Well, he made his video already so check it out if (you want to)[https://youtu.be/CxCzLV1pyUs?si=G3mBa8NIgQyvKAYk].

Is it Tho?

Is it Logical to Quit?
is the question that I sometime ask myself. Sometimes, I just get tired working on the things that I do. Seriously, it can be tiring to have that I will not quit or never give up mentality. So, in this blog I want to write to further formalize when I think people should stop doing the thing that they’re doing.

One of the thing that you should check is if that what you’re doing will ever get something in return. We often do thing to get something in return right? It would be useless if you persevere and get nothing.

I know that someone will say that, “when you persevere and get nothing, you’re not really getting nothing. You’re getting something”. Well, yeah, sure. But in this case, maybe it’s more logical to stop doing the thing you’re doing and focus on other things, don’t you think? Maybe the time is just not right. This is the case why Wirtual stopped grinding deep dip 2. But I believe that he’ll return and finish it, but only if the mapper finished the practice floor. This makes so much more sense since you’re trying to wait for the right time to start your grind.

Closing Remarks

I’m not really talking about trackmania here. I’m talking about live in general. Maybe it’s about your work, relationship, or other important things in your life, sometimes you gotta stop and try to take a step back. It’ll work out at the end. Just believe in yourself. Yes, maybe it’s logical to take a step back and consider your option at the moment.

Is it Logical to Quit? is a question that I sometimes ask myself when I get tired working on things.
I am a person who can easily get lost in his feelings, especially if they are strong feelings. Sometimes, I just don’t realize it, but bam! All of a sudden, my romantic feelings for someone consume me.

When I think about it, it’s pretty good… that is, if I can control it. The problem is: I can’t. I often have this obsessive and compulsive behavior toward someone. My obsessive behavior is rooted in the fact that I put her as my priority all the time. It’s terrible because I have other things to do. Also, I must remember that God should be the focus of my life.

My compulsive behavior comes from the fact that I always need to check my phone to see if she has already replied to my messages. Again, it’s actually not that bad if I can control it. The problem is that I still can’t. I always have the urge to check my phone every 2 minutes to see if she’s already replied to my message. These kinds of compulsive behaviors can drive a girl crazy even if she’s already deeply in love with me.

The Protocol

To address this, I wrote this blog! I want to make a protocol that I can read so that I don’t become obsessive and compulsive towards a girl. This protocol will be followed if I find a girl I like. This protocol should be followed before you ask her to be your girlfriend. The protocol is divided into 2 categories: first being my own filter and second being God’s will.

First, let’s talk about my own filter (aka my criteria)

Check if she motivates you to do God’s will. It can be anything, whether to teach, do counseling, programming, or anything God wants me to do. This can be ambiguous. Because I can’t know what God’s will for me is. I can’t say that God’s will is what I’m mastering because sometimes it’s the hard things that God wants me to do. On the other hand, it can be the more accessible, more superficial things that God wants me to do. There is no way of knowing God’s will for me is… but I’m pretty sure God will show me the way.

You’re also helping her achieve what God wants HER to do. It’s actually the same case with the point above; it’s just us playing the opposite role this time. In other words, the reverse.

Check for my own obsessive and compulsive behavior towards her. This is important because you want to avoid making the same mistake such that a person gets your obsessive and compulsive treatment, right? This can be checked by seeing how much you’re prioritizing her. Always remember that she is not on top of your priority list. Please treat her with space for her to grow. Also, trust that God will keep her safe wherever she is. But, if she’s not dressed modestly, she’s not the one. That is not negotiable. If you’re dealing with a case where she is already close to you, but you’re giving your obsessive and compulsive behavior again, please search for help. Please realize that she is not on top of your priority list. If you can’t do it, look up for help.

The Right Most Couple on the Normal Distribution. Based on previous relationship, I’ve noticed that how we think about relationshop is different with most people. This is important for me because I hate the fomo culture. I really don’t like to follow what other people think how things should be done. I want my relationship with a special person to be specific for me.

Worth it for each other. This is actually written in the Bible. Somehow, you’ll just feel it. You’ll feel that you’re worth it for each other. Both of your “level” are approximately the same. If not, you’ll feel like the other person will try to make you to be better at the part where you or her aren’t worth.

The next thing that I can do pipelining while doing my filter (that I mentioned above) is to do these things:

Pray. It’s not hard to do, but most people often forget it. You should ask God if she’s really the one. The answer from God can be one of these points:
Yes or yes or perhaps wait, no because I have something better for you.
Either way, the only way to know what God wants me to do is to pray every day to ask him for the answer and wait for God’s timing. You should ask God if she’s His will or not.

The Relationship Itself

This is the part where I need more space for elaboration. I can make a new blog discussing this subsection. But I decided to put it here because I want my blog to be free of rules. I just want this one blog to be filled with rules.

In this part, we’ll discuss love and rules. It is a pretty broad topic if I might add it, but it should be written so that I have the ground truth to compare my thoughts to when I’m in a relationship.

Love

This is the part where my psychological background should help…

I should remember that love is just chemistry running inside my brain. It’s just a bunch of hormones that flood my brain. These hormones probably come from biological things needing to reproduce so they don’t go extinct. The same thing goes for love, I suppose. The question is, do I want to accept it?

As a modern human, people sometimes get offended by that thought. But I can’t think of anything more accurate than that.

What about me? For me, love is a hormone that floods our brains. But you should remember that love is also what makes life worth living. Your relationship with everybody and the legacy you leave makes your life worth living. Love is how a person can live the rest of their life with their favorite person. It’s a pretty special bond, if I might add.

So, there should be a balance of those 2 things: hormones and the relationship that makes life worth living.

Rules

Ah yes, this part… someone in John Wick says, “Rules. Without them, we live with the animals”. This can’t be more accurate. The fact that with rules, we can be better people should not make us hate them, right?

Like an operating system, I think rules are essential in our life. I remembered that my operating system lecturer said that an operating system is just like the law book of our computer. I wonder if that’s true or not (it probably is true). But I just wanna say that without the law controlling our computers, racing conditions, and deadlocks could happen inside our computers. We don’t want that to happen, right?

The one and I think the very essential problem in a relationship is when 2 sides refuse to communicate appropriately when there is a problem. The problem is frequently not the real problem; it’s their ego. That is why, in my future relationship,
one of the most important rules is that when the clock hits 00:00, both parties should stop being angry at each other
. This rule is a must and can’t be negotiated. Also, if both parties are in different time zones, the time used for this rule is for the person who has the faster time and who hits 00:00 on their clock faster.

A new that I’ve gotten out of my mind that I haven’t implemented is to do presentation. This presentation will be done bi-weekly and monthly. This presentation will be done using chat, voice call using any communication media possible, and irl meet. Feel free for both parties to use power point. The goal of this is to give each other life update. Also, it’s a great opportunity to express gratitute towards God and to each other.

Ending

If I were about to say: this list/protocol could change, would you see it as a loophole? Probably yes. That’s why I won’t know it. The fact is that this is a fixed list for checking if she’s the right person or not. This list could be added, tho. Best luck to you.

A personal protocol and self-reflection on managing feelings, priorities, and criteria before entering a relationship.

Surabaya Holiday

Introduction

Well it’s not actually a holiday. Let’s just say it’s some family business thingy. But yeah, it was on the lebaran holiday so why not call it a holiday right?

At first, I actually told my parents that I don’t want to join their holiday on Surabaya because I have lots of homework to do. But actually, after doing one of the homework, it’s actually not that much (you’ll see that I’m very wrong). Long story short, I reject their proposal that I’ll join then to Surabaya to the fact that I’m on a train ride to Surabaya with them.

We used Sembrani Tambahan train at midnight. . We departed from Gambir stasion, Jakarta at midnight. It was the perfect time because we can sleep while we’re on the train. Also the babies and kids doesn’t cry because it’s midnight and it’s their time to sleep. I’d recommend you guys to ride train at night for that very reason. Also, another interesting thing is that the train was full but most people left when we passed Semarang. I think most people just want to go to Semarang after all :D

Closing Statements

Oh well, I forget to continue this post. I’ve already forgotten what did I do on Surabaya. One thing for sure was that I ate doner kebab and wen to pak soleh. Well… maybe a story for another time huh?

But who knows what tommorow hold?

Storm Before the Calm

Seeing Light in the Middle of dark

Prologue

I’d like to assume that you’re having a bad day.

Heck, maybe you’re feeling like your life is just a piece of nothingness.

Or even worse, you’re feeling that life’s not worth living.

The fact is at some point in our life, we’ll think about that. Eventually, the thought that we’re nothing compared to this universe and all it’s glory will make us think that nothing matters. Or simply, you come to this thought because you’re having a series of bad things happening on your life, and you’d like to simple think about stuffs rationally. Well, in this post I just wanna share my thoughts on this matter. Because I’ve been there.

Monologue

Let’s start with how did I get that thought. The thought that I am just a spect of dust; a nothingness.

<details close="">

TL;DR

I was having a retreat for my catechization (in bahasa Indonesia: _katekisasi_) at South Sulawesi. It was kinda far from Makassar, the provincial kapital of South Sulawesi. So you can imagine that there is not to many life there. There, only me, my catechization friends, and our facilitator that stayed on that villa for the night. Long story short, it was night. We (the people that are doing catechization) was being asked to talk to the facilitator one by one. While waiting for my turn, I got bored. It was around 11 pm. I stayed away (to respect the privacy of my friend) and explored the villa. At some point, I heard a wave. I notice that I am very close to a beach. Imagine the sound of the wave at the middle of the night and looking at the never ending horizon. I looked above and see that there was so many stars. Here, I got an ephiphany that I was just a mere human that cannot control a lot of things. The nature that I am having is very limited to space and time. I took some pictures and be grateful to God that He sent His Son to die for me (at least this is what I believe. Feel free to think so if you have your own faith). It's that simple to know but it's very hard to appriciate it. Back to the waiting game (remember that I was waiting for my turn to talk and have a private conversation with my facilitator) I got back and talked to my friends waiting for my turn. Suprisingly because of the nature of the talk, I didn't got any chance to do so. But oh well, I do think it's interesting that my friends got that experience. It's not like I was having a problem at that time :D

</details>

The point is that at a beach I looked so many stars. I know that using the science that humans developed along the years that those stars are probably bigger that ours. I also know that it is probably millions, billios, or even trillions of kilometers in diameter. But the fact that it reached my eyes looking like a very small dot made me realize that those enormous stars are very very far. Sometimes you can’t comprehend it and take that for granted right. Here, I am assuming that you believe that there is a prima causa (the first “entity” to cause everything). If there is such an entity, well I think that this entity is just very big. And the fact that I am a christian, my personal statement states that my God (the one who created) this gigantic universe sent His Son to die at the cross for me. Does this paragraph made you feel small and big at the same time?

This is the feeling that I am still getting to this day. The fact that I am just an ordinary person living on this not so-big planet, revolving around an average star made me realize that I am nothing. But, I do realize that a God is always with me. No matter the circumstance, He’s always with me. You might ask, “How could you know?” To that question, I will answer that I feel it. How do I feel it? In my life. There’s always a thing that made me survive the day. A simple example is that everytime I take the elevator, it never fails. Another example is that when I cross the road, all those cars slowed down for me. There could be a day where my “luck” goes out right? But the fact that I’m here, made me thankful for today. I don’t know about you but I think it’s beautiful.

Epilogue

Yes, we’ve come to an end. I just want you to know that if you’re having a hard problem in your life, remember that a higher power is there. I don’t wanna talk about which faith that you’re having, but I just like you to know that life’s worth living. Don’t be scared to talk about your problems to the people around you. Most of them be happy to talk about it. Remember that it is often in the darkest skies that we see the brightest stars ✨. Seriously tho, I found that by being in the dark moments in life that I personally met my creator. It’s not like I see Jesus in my dream or something like that. It’s just I feel it. I feel that joy everyday when I know that things are not going too well for me. You just see lots of stars on those darkest skies. On mine darkest skies, I found my new hobby, which is table tennis. It was fun to play with my friends. Trash talking is one of thing that I likes to do. The joy that you get from those kind of moments really made me realize that everything is under control. Not yours, but your creator.

A personal reflection on finding hope, faith, and gratitude during dark or challenging moments in life.

2024 Bandung Holiday!

Introduction

This is the story of my adventure when I went to Bandung. Some things happened there, so I want to tell you about it.

The Journey

My family and I went to Gambir station early in the morning (actually not that early because our train was not that early). There, we ride the Argo Parahyangan to Bandung. It was a beautiful Sunday morning. Before going to Bandung, we ate breakfast at McDonald’s at Gambir station. Because it was still under 11 am, McDonald’s was still serving the breakfast menu. I ate big breakfast menu there.

After a fulfilling breakfast, we rode the train to Bandung. On the way to Bandung, I interviewed for the Sobat Curhat position at @rentangjiwa_. Surprisingly, I got accepted for that position. To this day, I want to understand why I got accepted for a position with minimum requirements for undergraduate psychology students. But oh well, that’s that, right? Anyway, let’s continue the story about the train ride.

I sat in a seat facing opposite the train’s travel direction. It may be dizzying for some people, but for me, it wasn’t. I enjoyed every bit of that train ride. I listened to many hymns on my Spotify. It was amazing. Seeing many beautiful views on the way proves that my God is an amazing God who created this beautiful world. That’s one way to see it.

First Step on Bandung

When my family and I arrived in Bandung, we were starving. We dropped our bags at the hotel, checked in, and found the nearest restaurant on Braga Street. The food in the restaurant was not recommended. It wasn’t tasty, and it was expensive.

The Drama

Later that day, we went to the church. We went to GPIB Bethel for church. It was a small and simple church. The sermon was great to start the year. I love it. The only thing that I hated that day was that I had an ulcer and had the urge to poop so badly. That was the situation at that time. After the Sunday service, I ran to my hotel. It was a 10-minute walk that was very tortuous. But I told myself, “I can do it; just calm down, and everything’s gonna be alright. Eventually, you’ll arrive at the hotel; just chill out”. I said that over and over again, and I arrived at the hotel and pooped as much as I could. That was an unforgettable day, not because of the poop drama but because that day reminded me that no matter how hard the situation, you’ll get over it eventually.

The Day After the Drama

After that day, I got terrible news about my Data Structure and Algorithm score. My score was 53.33, which is below 55, the passing grade. It was heartbreaking knowing that I never failed any class. Little did I know that I got a chance to take the remedial course. Anyway, I rode Bandros, or Bandung Tour on the Bus later that day. It was definitely worth the money, considering it was a 40-ish minute city tour with its own tour guide.

After that, we went to Factory Outlet, and I met my friend at a mall that I forgot the name of (not my friend, the mall!).

The story of my adventure and experiences when I went to Bandung in early 2024.

The Controversy of Operant Conditioning

Motivation

My interest in operant conditioning was sparked when I delved into the realm of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In contemporary AI, reinforcement learning techniques are frequently employed to train models in acquiring new skills. The realization that reinforcement learning is rooted in psychological principles ignited my desire to delve deeper into this field.

Reinforcement Learning

Reinforcement learning essentially involves guiding an agent to perform desired actions by selecting actions that maximize rewards based on a predefined reward function.

The reward function is mathematically represented as

\[R(s, a, s')\]

$ s $: Denotes the current state of the system.

$ a $: Represents the action selected by the agent.

$ s’ $: Signifies the subsequent state following the execution of action $ a $.

Notice that it is problem specific.

Does this explanation feel a little too much? Maybe. Let me explain with an example. Think about when you want your little sibling to learn good habits, like cleaning up toys after playing. To encourage this, you might give them a reward each time they tidy up. Over time, they start wanting to clean up on their own, even without you telling them. This is kind of like what we want to do in machine learning and AI to make things better by encouraging good actions, just like you encourage your sibling to clean up toys!

For a more rigorous explanation with heavy mathematics notation, feel free to visit the wikipedia page.

Operant Conditioning

Reinforcement learning is basically the subset of operant conditioning. Doesn’t know what does subset means? See this image.

While you can see that reinforcement learning is a method to make kids (or agents in the context of machine learning or AI) to encourage them to do something, operant conditioning make use of 2 big ideas, which is encouragement (reinforcement learning) and punishment. When you want to encourage kids or machine to do something, you give them reward. Conversly, if you don’t want kids to do something, you punish them right? That is so that you discourage them to do something that you don’t want them to do. That is the big idea of operant conditioning. By using encouraging or discoraging techniques to train your kid to behave as you want them to.

The Controversy

Great! Now that we’ve wrapped our heads around what Operant Conditioning and Reinforcement Learning entail, let’s dive into the juicy stuff—the controversy! Picture this: it all hit me one lazy afternoon as I pondered the curious ways we educate our kiddos.

Here’s the twist—I find it a tad sketchy that parents often use operant conditioning on their children. Why, you ask? Well, turns out, zookeepers use the exact same technique to train animals! Crazy, right? And here’s the kicker: we’re applying reinforcement learning techniques to teach machines to do what we want them to do. Now, that’s a hot topic up for discussion!

Now, my take on this is a bit of a rollercoaster. On one hand, I reckon we might need a sprinkle of operant conditioning to educate our little humans. But—and it’s a big BUT—we’ve got to make sure they don’t end up dodging punishment or doing things just for the reward. After all, what sets us apart as humans? It’s our knack for thinking, our conscious minds, and the free will to decide what we do or don’t do. Let the pondering begin!

Exploring the intersection of Operant Conditioning in psychology and Reinforcement Learning in AI, along with its ethical controversies.

The Story of my TP3 SDA

Introduction

Let’s start with the premise that Data Structure and Algorithm is very hard for me.

Unlike most of my friends that I observe I am bad at coding. You may ask, “Really? Darrel is a student at the University of Indonesia and he can’t code?” and I think that very comment is fair.

With that premise, you can guess my score at my Tugas Pemograman (TP) score. My first and second TP score was 12 and 4 accordingly. Suprising? I guess not.

But what’s suprising is my TP3 score. I got 51 for it. I am very lucky and happy for the score. I really really am. It feels impossible considering that I expect to only get 0 this time due to the score trend of each TP.

Lesson Learned

Well, the only thing that I wanna say is that nothing is impossible I guess. Anything can happen. You just need to work for it and hope that luck is with you. I am not the kinda guy who believe in luck btw. I used that word to make this blog universal. But, if you’re religious, you can subtitute the word luck with God. I really believe that if the thing that you want feels impossible but that’s God’s will to happen, well nothing can stop it from happening to you.

A personal reflection on overcoming programming challenges and surviving the TP3 Data Structures and Algorithms assignment.

Chill Out

Now I’m listening to Put Your Records On by Corinne Bailey Rae.

Anyway, in these first 2 blog posts, I write the music that I’m listening to when I write this blog. I think that I’m doing that so you (as the reader) can know the mood as I write this blog.

Firstly, let’s talk about this song. It’s very chill, judging by the tune. The music simply conveys that we should just chill out. It’s not rocket science, and I will not make it complicated.

So what’s next? I’ve written a blog post about not worrying before, so what do I want to express through this post? I want to talk about how you can enjoy yourself.

These days, fear of missing out (FOMO) often happens in society, and I hate it.
People follow each other because they don’t want to get left behind. At least for me, it’s a sad thing. People fear being a pioneer because they just follow each other’s footsteps.

Let me tell you a story. The other day I met a new friend. He is a good guy. I told him that I like to wander alone. Then, he said to me that it was very sad. Yes, yes, that’s the whole story.

Reading my story back, it’s weird that he told me it’s sad. But I can see why he said that. I wonder if he had tried that before. I can’t stop pondering why people keep having this stigma that being alone is awful. On the contrary, I think being alone is an excellent way to take a break.

The only person who matters that you’re alone is yourself. You will not hear anybody whining. You don’t have to compromise with one another. You don’t have to fight with another. All you care about is yourself, and you do you. That’s peaceful, don’t you think?

Before traveling, my head was filled with lots of noise. But, when traveling by myself, there was silence in my head. In my case, I found a lot of peace by traveling alone. I also got some things to write because of the peace that I got. I’ll write those thoughts in my future blog post.

Yup, that’s the whole story. Have I persuaded you to go out by yourself to be alone? I hope so? I don’t know tho. Maybe that friend was right that going out by myself was weird. The point is, just try it if you haven’t. I don’t know; maybe it can chill you up. Next up, let’s talk about how I see FOMO, okay?

Thoughts on enjoying your own company, avoiding FOMO, and finding peace by taking time to chill out.
